Prepare Your Property for a Beautiful and Healthy Fall Season

Hi all – Adam here!

As we enjoy these warm, sunny days of late August, it is hard to think that Autumn is just around the corner. Planning for the change of seasons brings to mind landscape that you might find helpful to preserve your lawn, gardens, trees and shrubs.

Key Autumn Landscaping Tasks

  1. Leaf Removal:

Keep lawns and garden beds clear of fallen leaves to prevent mold, encourage healthy grass, and reduce hiding places for pests. Mulch leaves for compost or curbside collection.

  1. Lawn Care:

Continue mowing until the grass stops growing completely. Set mower blades higher for the last few cuts. Aerate your lawn to reduce soil compaction and overseed bare patches for a lush spring start.

  1. Pruning:

Prune dead or diseased branches from shrubs and trees to prevent winter damage. Avoid heavy pruning of spring-blooming plants, as this can reduce next season’s flowers.

  1. Planting:

Autumn is ideal for planting perennials, bulbs (like daffodils and tulips), and trees. The cool weather helps roots get established before winter. Choose native plants suited to our area’s climate.

  1. Garden Cleanup:

Remove all spent annuals and cut back perennials as needed. Clean up vegetable gardens and remove any diseased plant material to prevent issues next year.

  1. Mulching:

Apply a fresh layer of mulch around trees, shrubs, and garden beds to insulate roots and suppress weeds. Use organic mulch like wood chips, pine needles, or chopped leaves.

  1. Winter Preparation:

Protect sensitive plants with burlap wraps or windbreaks. Drain and store hoses, shut off outdoor water sources, and clean garden tools to prevent rust and damage.

  1. Wildlife-Friendly Practices:

Leave some seed heads and brush piles to support birds and small animals. Consider planting late-season blooms for pollinators preparing for winter.

Heads-up!

  • Watch for early frosts—cover tender plants with fabric on cold nights.
  • Salt spray and coastal winds can damage landscape plants; select salt-tolerant species and use windbreaks if necessary.
  • Prepare for heavy autumn rains by ensuring good drainage in garden beds and around foundations.
  • Plan fall landscaping projects early. Local nurseries stock bulbs and perennials best suited for Maine in September and October.

By following these autumn landscaping and maintenance tips, you will help ensure a healthy, attractive property and set the stage for a vibrant MDI Spring!
