Capitalizing on MDI’s Autumn Moisture: The October Landscape

October on Mount Desert Island is spectacular. While the vibrant color of Acadia draws onlookers from all over, seasoned property owners know that October is a great time for the landscape itself.  It can be one of the best times for planting new shrubs, perennials, and spring bulbs.

The secret lies right in this month’s climate: cool air temperatures, warm soil, and a natural rise in seasonal rain. Here is how we can capitalize on this unique autumn environment to set your property up for a beautiful display next year.

Perfect Planting Time

During the summer, plants divide their energy between growing leaves, fighting off heat stress, and building root systems. In October, that dynamic shifts.

  • Perfect Soil Warmth: While our night temperatures begin to dip into the 30’s and 40’s, the soil retains summer warmth for weeks. This creates an ideal environment for roots to grow comfortably.

  • Natural Hydration: October is historically one of our wetter months on MDI. Consistent rainfall ensures newly installed root systems get the moisture they need to anchor deep into the soil before winter dormancy sets in.

  • Less Shock: Moving a plant in the summer heat can sometimes cause transplant shock. The crisp fall air allows a shrub or perennial to establish itself gently without losing moisture through its leaves.

Smart Choices for the October Landscape

These specific varieties excel when tucked into the ground right now:

  1. Spring-Blooming Bulbs: Daffodils, Tulips, and Alliums need the winter chill to trigger their spring blooms. Tucking them safely into the soil now guarantees a burst of early color as soon as the snow melts.

  2. Hardy Native & Flowering Shrubs:

    • Witch-hazel (Hamamelis virginiana): A beautiful native option that actually blooms with fragrant, bright yellow flowers in late autumn and early winter when everything else goes to sleep.

    • Red Osier Dogwood (Swida sericea): Highly adaptable to coastal soils, this shrub features stunning burgundy fall foliage and brilliant red stems that provide striking color all winter long.

    • Lilacs (Syringa): Putting lilacs in during October gives their root systems months to anchor, leading to much stronger, highly fragrant spring blooms.

  3. Resilient Fall Perennials: To support local pollinators, October is a prime window to plant hardy perennials like Coneflowers (Echinacea), Asters, and Joe-Pye Weed. Their root networks settle in beautifully during our damp autumn weeks.

Protect with Autumn Pruning & Mulch

October is also a protective month for existing ornamental features. Adding a clean layer of premium organic mulch around newly planted and sensitive root systems acts like a winter blanket. This insulates the soil against radical temperature swings and locks in that vital autumn moisture.

Additionally, addressing dead or structurally weak wood on larger ornamental shrubs protects them from the heavy, wet snow and high winds that later autumn storms can bring.
